Call for Applications to the 16th Annual Baku Summer Energy School
The Institute for Development and Diplomacy (IDD) of ADA University is delighted to announce a Call for Applications to the 16th annual Baku Summer Energy School (BSES).
BSES is an annual two-week certificate program offered in July by ADA University in partnership with the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) and bp Azerbaijan.
Every year the program brings together 40 participants from around 15 countries selected from the pool of over 200 applications to discuss and develop a better understanding of global and Caspian energy affairs. Instructors represent leading academic institutions (e.g. the University of Oxford, Georgetown University, Texas A&M University, SciencesPo, etc.), the corporate sector (e.g. SOCAR, bp, Equinor, Total, ACWA Power, Masdar, etc.), the government (e.g. Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, State Oil Fund (SOFAZ), etc.), international organizations, and diplomatic missions.
The 16th BSES will be held on the ADA University campus on July 16-30, 2022. The program’s first week will be dedicated to the oil and gas industry, while the second week will be discussing green and renewable energy.
In particular, the following topics will be discussed:
- Energy fundamentals
- Energy economics
- Energy law
- Energy geopolitics
- Natural resource revenue governance
- Sustainable development and climate change
- Renewable energy
- Electricity markets and their reforms
- Global and regional energy outlook

WHO ARE THE BSES INSTRUCTORS AND SPEAKERS?
The program provides a balanced approach in studying energy and the environment. BSES instructors and speakers are the leading national and international experts from academia, public and private sectors:
- World-renowned scholars in the field of energy and the environment from the leading academic institutions, including the University of Oxford, John Hopkins University, Georgetown University, ADA University, etc.
- Ministers and heads of governmental agencies, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Energy, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, Head of the State Oil Fund (SOFAZ)
- Representatives of international organizations, including the International Energy Agency (IEA), International Energy Charter, United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), etc.
- Executives of (oil) companies and consortiums, including SOCAR, bp, ExxonMobil, TANAP, TAP, etc.
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?
BSES is organized for graduate students, junior and mid-career professionals working in the field of energy and the environment and/or with a particular interest in post-Soviet Eurasia and the Caspian. Please note that the program requires full proficiency in English.

The IDD offers a limited number of partial and full scholarships to outstanding participants on the basis of the financial need and merit. Please state the reasons for being considered for the IDD Financial Aid in the Scholarship Application Letter. Please note that this section cannot exceed 400 words (minimum 200 words) and is required only for the applicants seeking financial support.

Incomplete applications, as well as applications submitted after the deadline, will not be considered.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
Tuition fee for the 2022 Baku Summer Energy School is 2000 EURO. The fee includes teaching materials, field trip related costs, as well as all receptions, lunches and coffee breaks. The IDD grants a limited number of partial and full tuition scholarships to outstanding participants on the basis of the financial need and merit.
HOW IS THE SELECTION PROCESS CONDUCTED?
All applications received by the deadline will be reviewed by the BSES Selection Committee of ADA University. Application process is competitive, as the class size is limited to 40 participants only, while the number of applicants is much higher. Admission decisions will be based on a combination of proven interest, academic merit and professional experience in the energy and environment-related fields. A limited number of full and partial tuition scholarships will be provided to outstanding participants on the basis of financial need and merit. Preference will be given to self-funded applicants.
